I spend a lot of time training and, less often, teaching capoeira, a Brazilian martial art that brings in elements of acrobatics and music. It's also more or less completely non-contact.
In the past I've trained with Capoeira York, Cadencia Capoeira in Siegen, Germany, and Capoeira AboliĆao and Capoeira Senzala in Oxford.
I'm a member of Couchsurfing, which is a way to find a free place to stay with interesting people when you travel. My wife Emily and I have hosted hundreds of people in York, and we've both stayed with couchsurfing members all over the world. My profile can be found here.
I am a keen, if not particularly capable, player of the game of Go, which is an abstract board game vaguely similar to chess. For more information, look here. I also do injustice to the occasional game of chess, xiangqi (Chinese chess) and shogi (Japanese chess).
I've been learning Chinese (Mandarin) for a few years now, and am very interested in Chinese history and culture. In relation to my work, I'm very interested in the Chinese internet, and the culture that surrounds it.
